Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman announced that Lance M. Goods, Jr., 18, has been named a Sheriff's Scholar from Orleans Parish. He is the son of Cassandra Crowley, a nurse at Wellpath, OPSO's medical provider.

Lance, who graduated from Sophie B. Wright High School, recently completed his first semester at Southern University in Baton Rouge, where he is pursuing a mechanical engineering degree. Sheriff Gusman presented Lance with a certificate and a $500 Sheriff's scholarship which can be used to purchase books and supplies or to defray other educational expenses.

Funds for the scholarship are granted by the Louisiana Sheriffs' Scholarship Program for the 2020-2021 school year. Sheriff Gusman said, "I'm pleased that that Louisiana Sheriffs' Scholarship Program makes it possible for me to contribute to Lance's education. It's an investment into his promising future and an investment in our community's future."

As the winner in Orleans Parish, Lance joins scholarship recipients from other parishes where the local sheriff is an affiliate of the scholarship program. To qualify for a scholarship, applicants must be permanent residents of Louisiana, and the scholarship must be used in higher education within the state. Qualities such as academic achievement, leadership and character are considered in the selection of scholarship recipients.
